Is rest and sleep from God?

Yes. Rest and sleep is from God.

It is important to remember two matters: God created man in His image and likeness.
God gives much importance to rest, as in Genesis chapter 2, verse 2, we read that God rested on the seventh day from all his work. Thus, even our attitude and desire for rest and sleep should be because God desires rest and sleep for us.

Psalm 127:2 says It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.

Why is rest & sleep important for a believer in Jesus Christ?

Good rest and sleep ensures your mind is alert to think well, make the right decisions. You will become sensitive to the nudges, whisper, and voice of the Lord.

a) When we take rest, we exercise faith. When we sleep, we exercise faith. We express that God is the Lord over us. He has the absolute and final say in all aspects of our life, including prosperity and safety.

Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late. (Psalm 127:1)

b) Being busy – in other words, business is a distraction that keeps the faithful away from the presence of God. If a person is continually busy, it amounts to not having time for God. We can have time with God when we stop doing, reading, watching, worrying, and anxious about matters.

c) When we are still, we can hear attentively and get to change our mind, change the foundational basis on which we live, we work, we do things.

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.
(Luke 10:38-42)

Why should you read the Bible?

God is the creator. He is eternal. He is omnipotent & omniscient. So He knows everything about His creation – including mankind. Hence, it is important that we are grateful to Him and have a daily relationship with Him by reading the Bible, wherein we read the laws and principles He has given us for a wholesome life.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1: 1-2)

Embrace the Bible and the eternal truths mentioned in it, including taking rest and getting sleep. The benefits are many. Enhance productivity, healthier life, better work environment, superior ideas, and greater peace and joy.

The Spirit Of God authored the Bible, written through various men of God. Ordinary people with many shortcomings but with a surrendered heart to God. Hence, it is not surprising that principals and laws are spiritual and divine in nature – far, far superior to limited human understanding.

How does the world’s thinking differ from the Biblical principles on rest and sleep?

In the world system, doing one thing after another, wanting everything fast, and always being busy is the norm. Whereas in the Kingdom of God, rest is important, being restful is the ideal approach to life. These powerful declarations given above will banish anxiety, worry, and welcome rest from God into your life.

Experts in science and modern medicine say, 7 to 8 hours sleep is necessary for a healthy and long life. This was not the thinking earlier. Whereas the Bible says that God gives His beloved good sleep.
