Bible Reading, Tongue of the Learned, Ear to Hear

Today’s verse is from Isaiah 50:4. Here is the verse from three versions of the Bible.

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. (version KJV)

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. (version NIV)

The Lord God has given Me [His Servant] the tongue of disciples [as One who is taught],
That I may know how to sustain the weary with a word.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple [as One who is taught]. (version AMP)

This passage is a prayer for all of us – since all of us speak as well as hear. We are aware that, although this sounds simple, we are aware that only some among us speak well. The same goes with listening.

Active hearing is to be desired and chosen. Choosing what to hear and giving the right focus and attention matters. It implies that you will have to choose to hear the Lord’s voice and discern and ignore the enemy’s voice.

A disciple hears the master’s voice distinctly even in a place of great cacophony. His ears are instructed and tuned to hear that voice, trained to hear it. As a learned person, the ear discerns what is superfluous and knows what to focus on and what to ignore. To prove this point, you may wish to ask a mother if she has a special ability to hear even the gentle voice of her child, the farthest voice of her child. What you are tuned to matter most.

Similarly, with speaking, sensitivity to knowing when to speak, when to speak in words spoken in silence. On a typical day we come across many people. All of them look normal, and seem to be happy. Only with discernment do we get to understand the heartbreaks they are going through while showing a brave front. matters

When the Holy Spirit leads us to be sensitive to this, he reveals details which are freezing, sorrowful, for years among the people we interact with. And when we speak in obedience to the Spirit, following the instructions of the Holy Spirit, we get to witness a breakthrough, liberty, freedom and fullness of joy.

1. Imagine the shift in your daily life if you hear well and speak well.
2. You can start by identifying the hearing and saying what you should not have done.
3. Start by identifying the hearing and telling you should have done.
4. Declaring daily any of the versions of the Bible verse shown above. Do so for a minimum of 60 days as this shows perseverance and seriousness in terms of your desire.
